Papier Mache is a delicate decorative art which shows the artistic Zeal of a craftsman.
The last was introduced in Kashmir, India in the 15th century by a Kashmiri Prince who spent years in prison at Samarkand in Central Asia.
It is hard to believe that these pieces begin as moulded paper pulp. While the basic shape comes from a mould, the last layer before painting is applied fresh, and sculpted or embossed by hand. After passing through the hands of several artists and craftsmen, each specialising in a specific layer of the process, an object of exquisite beauty comes to life.
